Yemen Ports

Geographical & general information

The Yemen is situated in the Southern end of the Arabian Peninsula bordered to the North by Saudi Arabia and to the east the Sultanate Of Oman. The Red Sea on its West coast and the Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean on the South coast. The territory also incorporates the island of Socotra which is situated off the tip of the Horn of Africa. The total area of the Yemen is reported to be 555,000 sq.km excluding the Rub Al Khali. The country has a growing population current consensus of 21 million with the majority situated in the northern area.

The country is predominately  Muslim with Arabic being the national language.

Time zone - GMT plus 3 hours.

Work hours:

  • Government offices work a single shift Saturday to Wednesday 0800 to 1500 hrs.

  • Private sector work two shifts
    Saturday to Wednesday 0800 to 1200 hrs and 1600 to 1900 hrs
     
    Thursday - 0800 to 1200 hrs
    Friday - Weekend

Transportation:
All inland transportation is byway of road transport via a net working of intercity highways. The highways and inner city road systems are constantly being upgraded with either improvements to existing road systems or new highways being constructed. Road transport is comparatively expensive and controlled by the transport unions.

Airports:
The main international airport is situated in the capital, Sanaa, and is currently served by a number of international airlines. There are also regional airports in Aden, Hodeidah, Taiz and Rayan.

Plans are underway to improve the airport facilities in Sana'a as well as opening up international flights to Aden International airport.

Sea ports of the Yemen:
 
Situated in the northern territories on the Red Sea

Hodeidah port.

Saleef port.

Ras Isa Oil Terminal.

Mokha port.

Situated in the Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean

Aden ports of Mallaá and Aden Container Terminal.

Little Aden Refinery.

Bal Haf LNG Terminal.

Mukalla port.

Ash Shihr Oil Terminal.


Natural resources:
Oil reserves: The Yemen is currently producing 350 to 370,000 bbls per day of crude oil which is exported through the terminals at Ras Isa and Ash Shihr.

Gas: Large reserves of natural gas with a major project currently underway for the exportation of the gas through a new sea terminal currently under construction at Bal Haf in the southern part of the country with direct access to the Indian Ocean.

Rock salt: Quarried adjacent to the port of Saleef.

Sea salt: Large salt pans in Aden.

Sea food: The export of fish/prawns /lobsters/shark fins and sea cucumbers is a fast growing industry particularly out of the southern ports of Aden and Mukalla.

Agricultural products: Cotton, coffee ( Mokha coffee ), bananas and fresh vegetables.
